Pioneers earn doubleheader sweep

PLATTEVILLE, Wis.—The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team won 3-0 and 9-2 against visiting UW-River Falls on Saturday, earning its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep since 2015.

In game one, Jess Butzen threw a complete-game shutout, holding the Falcons to three singles.

Emily Woodford, Kayla Kampmeier, and Thianna Wegner scored runs in the first inning, which was more than enough to support Butzen's pitching efforts.

In the nightcap, Wegner had three hits, and Jessy Tanel had both a double and triple. Crystal Rote and Rachel Bonnell each had a pair of hits for the Pioneers, who built a 5-0 lead after three innings. Taylor Emrath earned the win with four innings on the mound, while Butzen came back to throw the final three and record a save

UW-River Falls is 11-18 overall and 3-5 in the WIAC. The Pioneers, 10-22 overall and 3-7 in WIAC, will play host against UW-Stout on Sunday, April 23, which will also be Senior Day. First pitch is at noon.
