The University of Wisconsin-Platteville wrestling team competed at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Wrestling Championships on Sunday, Feb. 14 at UW-Stevens Point, where they placed fourth as a team.
Freshman
Scott Arneson received the John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet title for his 133-weight class win over UW-Whitewater's Joe Brodman. Arneson pinned Brodman at the 6:55 mark, earning himself first place in his weight-class.
Bohm earned fifth place for the Pioneers after pinning UW-Whitewater's Maxx Hubbard in the first round of the 149-weight class match.
In the 174-weight class, Carpenter fell to UW-Oshkosh's Julius Smith 8-2 in the fifth place match, earning himself a sixth place finish.
Wedepohl made it to the fifth place match where he dominated his UW-Whitewater opponent, winning the 184-weight class in a major decision 11-0.
In the 197-weight class, two Pioneers in Etherton and Cannon showed their strengths, Etherton making it to the championship match and Cannon to the fifth place match. Etherton fell in an 8-2 decision to UW-Lacrosse's Sean Ward, earning himself a second place title. He was also named to the All-Sportsmanship team for the tournament, an honor that one wrestler from each team holds.
In Cannon's fifth place match, he defeated UW-Eau Claire's Cecil Philson in a major decision 10-0 win to earn the fifth place rank.
When it came time for the 285-weight class, Johnson fought his way to the championship match, but fell to fellow freshman Clay Broze of UW-La Crosse in an 8-4 decision.
Two Pioneers also received their WIAC Athlete of the Week plaques at the conference championships on Sunday, including Bohm for his 4-0 performance at the Pioneer Invitational on Nov. 7 and Johnson for his pin against nationally-ranked Broze at UW-La Crosse on Jan. 16.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 27 at the NCAA West Regional Meet.
