Warhawks overpower Pioneers

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. -- The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team was setback by UW-Whitewater, 11-5 and 13-4 on Saturday at the UW-Platteville Softball Complex.

A pair of doubles by the Warhawks in the top of the first gave UWW a 1-0 lead.

UWW struck again with a solo homer in the fourth to go up 2-0.

The Pioneers tied it up when they got their chance to bat in the fourth. Junior Lisa Karau led the frame off with a single and then scored on sophomore Carley Rote's two-run homer.

With the bases loaded, Karau delivered a two-run RBI, giving the Pioneers a 4-2 lead. Senior Ellyn Goerdt drove in the Pioneers' final run of the game on a sacrifice fly, 5-2.

The Warhawks mounted a comeback in the seventh inning off with five consecutive hits and ended the frame with nine, earning an 11-5 comeback victory.

Freshman Jess Butzen took the loss, as gave up eight earned runs on 18 hits.

Karau led the Pioneers by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

UWW didn't waste any time in game two, as the Warhawks scored a run in the first and second then four more in the third inning, 6-0.

Goerdt delivered her second sacrifice fly of the day in the fourth to put the Pioneers on the board, 6-1.

The Warhawks answered with a run of their own in the fifth, but three run homer by UW-Platteville's junior Haley Salazar put the Pioneers within striking distance, 7-4.

Once again, UWW had another huge final inning, and started the frame with back-to-back-to-back doubles. The Warhawks finished their last at bats with seven hits and scored six runs for a comfortable 13-4 lead.

Salazar tallied four of the Pioneers' eight hits. Sophomore Keri Treml allowed 16 hits and 12 run in 6.1 innings, taking the loss.

The UW-Platteville's doubleheader set for Sunday at UW-Stevens Point has been postponed and rescheduled for Tuesday, April 22. The Pioneer nine will return to action on Thursday, April 17 at UW-La Crosse.
