PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville softball team was swept by UW-Stevens Point, 3-2 in 11 innings and 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Pioneer Softball Complex.
GAME ONE: UW-Platteville 2, UW-Stevens Point 3 11 innings
The Pointers broke the scoreless game in the third inning with the help of a Pioneer error, 1-0. UW-Platteville responded in the bottom half of the third with a run of their own. The Pioneers' Colleen Lowe singled up the middle to score Ellyn Goerdt, who got on base with a one-out single.
UWSP regained its lead in the fifth, 2-1, scoring one run on three hits.
The Pioneers tied the game back up in the bottom of the sixth frame on a two-out RBI single from senior Molly Rice.
The Pointers used three two-out hits to score the eventual game-winning run in the 11th.
The 11 inning marathon had 26 total hits, 16 by UWSP and 11 by the Pioneers. Both team's pitchers were able to get out of several jams as the Pointers left 17 on base and UW-Platteville left nine runners on base.
Goerdt led the Pioneers with three hits and freshman Haley Salazar tallied two hits.
Senior Melissa Anderson pitched the first four innings and then re-entered in the 10th and suffered the loss. She threw six innings striking out six and allowed nine hits and two runs (one earned). Junior Jeni Freiburger tossed five relief innings and only allowed one run on seven hits and five walks.
GAME TWO: UW-Platteville 3, UW-Stevens Point 6
The Pointers didn't waste anytime in the night cap to get on the board. UWSP started the game with a double, single and then cleared the bases with a three-run homer to take a 3-0 lead.
UW-Platteville started to chip away at the early deficit, scoring a run in the second and the third. In the second inning, senior Ashlen Folkers scored on a RBI double from Goerdt, and a RBI single from Salazar in the third made it a one-run game, 3-2.
UWSP answered with a run in the top of the fourth, 4-2, but the Pioneers put it back to a one-run game in the fifth, 4-3.
The Pointers added two insurance runs to make it a 6-3 game in the sixth inning.
Anderson once again took the loss as she gave up four runs on seven hits in four innings of work.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday when the travel to UW-Eau Claire for a their final conference doubleheader of the season.
